Church News:
June 30 Laos relaxed restriction on Christians in Attapeu province of southern Laos following years of persecution, the local government now recognizes Christianity as a legitimate religion. Only five years ago local authorities ordered believers to renounce their faith or be exiled from their villages. Christians were prohibited from using common wells, rice mills and other public facilities. At the beginning of 2002, 73 people professed faith in Christ. But by the end of the year, after heavy persecution, only 30 believers remained steadfast. Persecution continued in subsequent years as Christians were denied basic resources and forced to walk two hours to buy food. Local officials attached posters to the front doors of Christians to identify them. Persecutors poisoned the believers' animals and threw rocks at their homes. In 2004 several missionaries were arrested and imprisoned for one year. Now, however, for the first time, Christians are able to legally worship in churches. Today 336 believers gather for worship in the province with a sharp increase expected because of the new freedoms.

Through their own survey of congregants at Willow Creek and six other churches suggested that evangelistic impact was greater from those who self-reported as "close to Christ" or "Christ-centered" than from new church attendees. In addition, a quarter of the "close to Christ" and "Christcentered" crowd described themselves as spiritually "stalled" or "dissatisfied" with the role of the church in their spiritual growth. Even more alarming to Willow Creek: About a quarter of the "stalled" segment and 63 percent of the "dissatisfied" segment contemplated leaving the church. <more>

Apr 17 Pope praised America as a nation where strong religious belief can coexist with secular society.
He gave warning of the “subtle influence of secularism” that can co-opt religious people and lead even Catholics to accept abortion, divorce and co-habitation outside of marriage.
“Is it consistent to profess our beliefs in church on Sunday and then during the week to promote business practices or medical procedures contrary to those beliefs?” he asked. “Is it consistent for practicing Catholics to ignore or exploit the poor and the marginalized, to promote sexual behavior contrary to Catholic moral teaching or to adopt positions that contradict the right to life of every human being from conception to natural death? Any tendency to treat religion as a private matter must be resisted” <more>

Abortion in WA 8328 in 2006, 19.1 per 1000 women (18.2 in 2005). AMA president Rosanna Capolingua said the latest figures showed that making the socalled morning after pill Postinor-2 available without a doctor’s prescription had not reduced the number of abortions. The pill became available direct from pharmacists in January 2004. "We’re now seeing this explosion in sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia and women are not getting all the necessary advice when they buy a pill in a pharmacy. Given the relatively high level of contraceptive use and knowledge in Australia, many unintended pregnancies are thought to be due to method failure or inconsistent use." (source: The West 9/4/08)

WA Prostitution bill passed in Parliament after a descending MP decided to cast her vote for it. The West Australian Government originally hoped to have the prostitution bill passed quickly last year, knowing that they had the numbers to do this and refusing to allow a conscience vote for Labor MPs. The fact that this did not happen but that the passage of the legislation was delayed again and again, and in the end came down to one vote in the Upper House, is a testament to God’s hand at work and the way in which so many Christians have actively been involved in opposing the legislation. No one is happy, even a leading brothel owner:
"The laws would fuel the explosion of suburban “quasibrothels”, expose children to sex work in the home, put women and children at risk of violence, increase the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases and see more migrant women working illegally and being held against their will as “sex slaves”. How are they going to enforce these laws? There’s a lot more work to do. I don’t think they’ve consulted enough with the industry.”

Mar 28 New rift in WA Anglican Church
with reports from The West today that senior Anglican bishops are voicing their objections over WA Anglican Archbishop Roger Herft and Dean of Perth John Shepherd views that Jesus' resurrection and ascension to heaven may not be interpreted as both physical and spiritual. "If God cannot phsically raise Jesus from the dead then he can't raise us from the dead and there is no hope of heaven," says North-West Australia Anglican Bishop David Mulready. Bunbury Bishop David McCall joined in the objection, "Jesus was not resuscitated, he was resurrected. His resurrection body was different. It was in some way transformed and was no longer subject to the normal boundaries that our bodies are bound to.
