News:
Jul 25 Malaysia is at Spiritual and Political crossroads. A
visiting Malaysian Church Leader, Rev Jerry Dusing, head of the largest
home-grown church movement, SIB, urges Australians to pray with their
Malaysian counterparts for political stability and for a moderate government
to emerge out of the current political turmoil now griping his 27-million
nation. He welcomes Australian churches input into SIB and other Malaysian
Christian communities in order to strengthen and mature the Church. Rev
Dusing and SIB have taken the Prime Minister to court for the injunction
against them for importing publication containing references to God as
'Allah', a name that is commonly used by Arabs and Indonesians, both Christians
and Muslims alike, in reference to the Supreme God. The core of the legal
proceedings is to preserve the constitutional rights of all Malaysian
to enjoy religious freedom despite mounting Islamisation happening in
Malaysia.
Jul 22 Cambodia
General Election July 27, 2008
Currently ruled by Cambodian's Peoples Party under PM Hun Sen
since 1985. The opposition parties are led by disunited royalists providing
the ruling party an almost certainty to remain in power. Nevertheless,
Cambodia is rift with corruption and in dire needs of better public infrastructures
particularly in transport and judiciary. The Church in Cambodia enjoys
relative freedom and is one of the fastest growing in the world. Similarly,
Cambodia economic growth rates in recent years ranked amongst the highest
in the world, partly owing to the low points Cambodia experienced after
the disastrous Pol Pot regime and the civil wars that followed. Nevertheless,
Cambodians have been supportive of Hun Sen's rule and have voted him into
power in previous elections. However, price increases in food and transportation
will be greivance points that will be raised during the lead up to the
election.

Jul 18 Pope Benedict XVI's inaugural pontiff's all-emcompassing
message at the World Youth Day in Sydney both encouraged and challenged
all within and without the Church. "World Youth Day in Sydney has
seen an unprecedented public proclamation of the Gospel of Christ through
the Australian media. Far from just a call to private faith behind the
four walls of a church, this event has like no other, challenged, questioned
and confronted secular society with the social claims of the Christian
Gospel " -- ACL (Australian Christian Lobby)

June 30 Laos relaxed restriction on Christians in Attapeu
province of southern Laos following years of persecution, the local government
now recognizes Christianity as a legitimate religion. Only five years
ago local authorities ordered believers to renounce their faith or be
exiled from their villages. Christians were prohibited from using common
wells, rice mills and other public facilities. At the beginning of 2002,
73 people professed faith in Christ. But by the end of the year, after
heavy persecution, only 30 believers remained steadfast. Persecution continued
in subsequent years as Christians were denied basic resources and forced
to walk two hours to buy food. Local officials attached posters to the
front doors of Christians to identify them. Persecutors poisoned the believers'
animals and threw rocks at their homes. In 2004 several missionaries were
arrested and imprisoned for one year. Now, however, for the first time,
Christians are able to legally worship in churches. Today 336 believers
gather for worship in the province with a sharp increase expected because
of the new freedoms.

June 27 John Bond's Sonlife Burma Cyclone Ministry Appeal now top $30,000
since the appeal was first made immediately after the
cyclone that hit Burma in early May. John Bond happened to be in Burma
when the cyclone hit the nation. "It struck about 11.30 pm in our
hotel and lasted for the next 14+ hours. Our final day of training was
cancelled and we were all locked inside. The rain was horizontal for more
than 10 hours and seeing roofs lift off and crash back down, sheets of
corrugated iron fly through the air like tissues paper and big wooden
beams fly about like match sticks will forever be etched in my memory."
Regarding the fund he adds, "I have several businessmen who will
self fund their trips and we will go back into Burma (targeted July 29th)
to deliver the funds in person." To participate in the Appeal please

Quotes of the week:
I
ask myself, could anyone standing face to face with people who actually
do suffer violence and sexual exploitation explain that these tragedies,
portrayed in virtual form, are considered merely entertainment? Do not
be fooled by those who see you as just another consumer in a market
of undifferentiated possibilities, where choice itself becomes the god,
novelty usurps beauty and subjective experience displaces truth. Christ
offers more. Indeed, he offers everything.
Pope
Benedict XVI, World Youth Day Jul 17, 2008
Facts & Numbers:
What
deadly sin does the new iPhone most provoke in you?
Lust: I desperately want one because it looks so fun to play with.
Gluttony: I already have the old one, but I want the new one, too. Maybe
two or three of them.
Greed: I want one because it has neat features not available anywhere
else.
Sloth: If I got one, I'd only ever have to move my thumbs and my jaw.
Wrath: I am about ready to wring someone's neck over all this iPhone
hype.
Envy: I think a lot about how everyone else seems to have an iPhone.
Pride: I have demonstrated impressive self-control in not buying one.
