What
to expect in 2008:
Expect a new President in USA. Though the influence is somehow
diminished through the prolonged military engagements in Iraq and Afghanistan
and the resurgence of old powers like Russia and China the USA is still
the dorminant power of the world backed up by its considerable political,
financial and military clouts. The Democratic party selection process
for the President is becoming a tight race between Obama and Clinton.
If Obama wins the Democratic ticket he will be the first black candidate
to lead the party's presidential campaign. Unless Hillary hits a series
of setbacks she is still the favourite to win the Democratic Party race
and will be better placed than Obama to take on the candidate from the
Republicans to become the next President.
Expect Kevin Rudd to be under immense pressure by his
own party members to make changes in legislation touching social issues,
particularly, those relating to family, medical and relational issues
reflecting the liberal majority in his Cabinet.
Expect the Rise and Rise of China. The appreciation of
the Yuan against the US dollar is unlikely to dampen the economical growth
given the current momentum of development going on in the 1.3 billion
size behemoth. China is touted as the world's factory and this position
is unlikely to change in the forseeable future. The Beijing Olympics will
showcase China as Asia's leading power and of its coming of age as a world
leader.
Expect Price Increases. With rising economic activities around
the region expect record prices in energy, food, housing and even gold.
Expect Increased Migration. People movement either in
short term visits or long term stays between borders and regions will
increase as never before.
Expect Information Expansion. Data processing, storage
and transmitting capabilities will continue to expand changing the way
society operates. Increased bandwidths will change the way we communicate
and conduct our work and social activities.
Expect more Environmental instability. Natural disasters
will impact wider region and severely test the social and economic resources
of affected regions.
Expect the Gulf between Have & Have-Not to Widen. All
the above will widen the gaps in wealth, health and influence and add
to greater strife and intorelance.
What will all these lead the Church into? Rather, we will ask the question
of how the Church is going to lead the world in these times. Christ mandates
that the Church is to be the light of the world (Mat
5:14). We begin in the most unlikely position - rest. Christ has said,
"I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace.
In the world you will have tribulation." Likewise,
"See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone,
a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation;
the one who trusts will never be dismayed." Isaiah 28:16
Jesus Christ, the cornerstone of the Church, whom all authority
in heaven and on earth entrusted to by God, assures His church that He
will be with you to the very end of age (Mat
28:18-20).
May your roots grow deeper into the depths of the love and grace of Christ
Jesus in 2008.
Timothy
