A. Study Guide

1. The majority of the Old Testament marketplace heroes were
deeply involved in everyday marketplace issues.

2. David did not believe that fighting Goliath was a supernatural

enterprise and that running his business a secular one. God

was central in both of them.

3. The profit motive is to a businessperson what the drive to

win is to an athlete. With proper boundaries, it can benefit

millions of people and can provide the incentive required for

conquering exceptional challenges.

4. What did David see about God and his job that allowed him to

overcome his challenges?
He saw God deeply interested in everything he did, his job was

his ministry and his ministry was his job.

5. We have wrongly dichotomized the material and the

Spiritual worlds.


6. Why is the devil afraid of marketplace Christians?
The devil is afraid that Christians will fulfil their divine destiny in
the marketplace and bring the kingdom of God to it.

7. How does the devil try to disqualify marketplace Christians?
By debasing their occupation, by telling them that it is less spiritual
than Church work, ad by painting them as materialisic and unspirtual.

 

B. Reflection and Discussion

Why do you believe many marketplace Christians remain in

business but give up on experiencing the joy of the Lord in their

work or the joy of significant success?

Misconception that work as non-spiritual undertaking and serving
in the church as spiritual worship.
 
2. Describe your own struggle with a fear of profit or of becoming

materialistic.
Profit corrupts. Making lots of money is unchristian.

3. Do you believe that the tangible world is intrinsically evil? Why or

why not?
World is corrupted by sin. However, the world was created by God
and humankind was created in His own image. And God said that all
He created is good.

4. Have you considered that the devil may fear you as a

marketplace Christian? What are some ways he has tried to prevent

you from fulfilling your divine destiny in the marketplace?
We have access to the world, his stronghold, through our jobs or business.
By limiting Christian expression of faith within the boundary of the church,
particularly on Sunday only, unsure of how they can exercise their
spiritual giftings he outside of the church, etc.


5. Do you feel your work outside the Church is less spiritual than

work done inside the Church?
Our lack of understanding than our work is ordained by God and it is

an expression of our worship to God.
 

6. What are some benefits when pastors and businesspeople relate

as ministry peers?
We can together able to reach out to the world more effectively
by the businessperson’s pragmatism and resourcefulness and the
pastor’s spiritual insights and prayerfulness.
