ACL's Make it Count WA drew 1,000 attendees to hear from WA Deputy Premier Eric Ripper and WA Opposition Leader Colin Barnett just three days before the State Election. "Before the meeting I was leaning towards the Labor, however, after the meet I now lean towards Liberal because of my concern for Labor's stands on key ethical issues", voiced a pastor at the meeting. Another observer at the meeting, medical doctor and advocate of Medicine with Morality, Dr Lachlan Dunjey, wrote, "The ACL meeting at Burswood was very good, very well run, and extremely informative. Eric Ripper had a hard time defending his government’s appalling record on matters that concern us as Christians."

Church News:
Sep 4 Charisma's Steve Strang endorses John McCain for US Presidency.
"We understand why some like Barack Obama. He is young and personable, and his call for change is something that resonates with many Americans. He has reached out to the evangelical community as has no other Democrat since Jimmy Carter. And he is clear when he articulates his Christian faith, even though he has stated publicly that Christianity
is not the only road to heaven," says Strang, the founder of the popular Christian magazine. McCain's tougher stands on abortiion and homosexual issues too have weighted on Strang's decision. Meanwhile, McCain's VP choice, Sen. Palin, recovered quickly from the setback of his teenage's daughter pregnancy by gaining support from the Christian community through the media reports of her stand on faith issues and her church's involvement - she attends the Alaskan Wasilla Assembly of God.

Aug 13 Chinese House Churches to Shut Meetings Down During Beijing Olympics.
According to China Aid Association, (CAA), the document, drafted by Chinese government officials, specifies that the House Churches in China:"...refrain from organizing and joining illegal gatherings and refrain from receiving donations, sermons and preaching from overseas religious organizations and groups that have a purpose." CAA also says the document also prohibits the churches from gathering in their communities for more than 3 months while the Olympics are taking place. Should church members violate these rules they will be subject to the disciplinary actions of the Chinese Government.
"The discovery of this document provides further evidence of the PRC's hypocrisy towards creating a 'harmonious society' marked by religious freedom and rule of law." <AssistNews>

Aug 7 Malaysia is at Spiritual and Political crossroads.
Whilst attention is paid to former Deputy PM Anwar Ibrahim appearance at the High Court today on sodomy charges, another court hearing today is still been unfolding which involves a suit against a Minister within PM Abdullah Badawi potfolio, this time over the ban on importation of religious publication but also seek for a declarat ion that legislat ion made by order of the Internal Secur it y Act 1960 per taining to the prohibition of t he Al Kitab ( the Bahasa Bible ) be declared "unconst i t u t ional" constitutional. In a telephone interview today Rev Jerry Dusing expressed concern that the Court judge may once again postpone the hearing as had happened in previous appearances. In his recent visit to Perth, Rev Dusing who heads the largest home-grown church movement, SIB, urged Australians to pray with their Malaysian counterparts for political stability so that the gospels may freely be preached in this 27-million nation. He welcomed Australian churches input into SIB and other Malaysian Christian communities that will help strengthen and mature the Church.
Latest Update:
On 7th August the AG's office raised two objections to the submissions:
1. The case is now academic as the books have been released; and
2. It is out of time as established from the date of the first letter received from KDN
SIB
lawyers have three responses to the AG's objections. Time permits on 8thAug to present only the first of the three responses. The case will continue on the 15thAugust and 19th August. Please pray for wisdom for the SIB lawyers and also for the judge to be open minded and fair.

Cambodia General Election July 27, 2008 Fresh from his election victory Hun Sen, PM since 1985, is offering the opposition Funcinpec ministerial posts in his government. It is not surprising that Hun Sen is embarking on this path considering the border tension with Thailand and the need to fast-track the economic recovery, in particularly, the lucrative newly discovered oil and gas fields off Cambodia waters. The opposition parties were led by disunited royalists who are opposed to Christian activities in this Buddhist nation. Meanwhile, the Church in Cambodia enjoys relative freedom and is one of the fastest growing in the world. Cambodia economic growth rates in recent years ranked amongst the highest in the world, partly owing to the low points Cambodia experienced after the disastrous Pol Pot regime and the civil wars that followed. Jul 18 Pope Benedict XVI's
inaugural pontiff's all-emcompassing message at the World Youth Day in Sydney both encouraged and challenged all within and without the Church. "World Youth Day in Sydney has seen an unprecedented public proclamation of the Gospel of Christ through the Australian media. Far from just a call to private faith behind the four walls of a church, this event has like no other, challenged, questioned and confronted secular society with the social claims of the Christian Gospel " -- ACL (Australian Christian Lobby)

Quotes of the week:
There is irony in Solzhenitsyn's American reception. We praised him for crippling the Kremlin by the power of his courageous truth telling. But we disapproved when he spoke his mind about American decadence.

Facts & Numbers:
Run the extra mile
Researchers at Stanford University in California found from a nationwide survey on running club that exercise extending to 200 minutes a week showed significant health benefits as compared to the average 20 minutes a week of an average person. middle-aged members of a runner's club were half as likely to die over a 20-year period as people who did not run. Running reduced the risk not only of heart disease, but of cancer and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's.

In God We Trust fancy a name like that? A man in Chicago had successfully cleared Court's jurisdiction on Steve Kreuscher's name change petition. The school bus driver and amateur artist says the new name symbolizes the help God gave him during tough times and says he can't wait to begin signing his artwork with his first name, In God, and his surname as 'We Trust'. The 57-year-old testifies that the new name symbolises the help God gave him during tough times.

BROTHERS OF A HEAVENLY GLORY
Dr John Yates
When Jesus said, No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, he provides the framework whereby Christians ought to relate also one to another. The sacrificial exercise of individual giftings and callings guided by a complete devotion to Christ and his church and expressed through the unifying prayers of the saints will moved heaven to respond. This process is referred to in Hebrew 2:10 as the bringing many sons to glory - brotherhood of a heavenly glory.

A POLITICAL NEW WAVE IN MALAYSIA
Rev Allen Tan
Even as we await the results of the Zimbabwe election there is a change coming to another former British colony, Malaysia, with the general election last month that almost oust the government in power since 1957. In this post mortem on the Malaysian election Allen Tan, a pastor and a journalist, provides an insightful account of the election and how the Church in Malaysia can ride this new political wave sweeping the nation. <more>
